Have feet, will travel!

harness buddyOnce your child starts walking and then some (the 2, 3, and 4 year olds are best at wandering off by themselves. It is a real worry for most parents that they will lose their child in a crowded area. To keep them safe, many parents have resorted to harnesses for their child. Unfortunately, this doesn’t work well for 2 reasons: 1. The child knows he is being restrained from wandering off and will try to remove the harness, and will yell and scream until you do so. 2. You get disapproving frowns from most people of treating your child like a puppy. We found this harness to be better for those reasons alone. The Eddie Bauer 2-in-1 Harness Buddy - Monkey. The child will wear it because it’s cute and like a backpack for them, and they love it. 2. You do not get the disapproving looks but aww, how cute, looks.

Trumpette Baby Socks!

My friend’s baby girl was wearing these socks and they cracked me up! They are the Trumpette Baby Socks - Mary Jane Pastels and it looked like she was wearing shoes. They are just too cute and funny not to want to hoard some for your own. I highly recommend these socks to add to the cuteness of your baby (not to mention your own entertainment). They are also available in a sneaker version for boys.

Great Activity Center

The Baby Einstein Discover & Play center is great for a 6 month to 1 year plus old. They love to play with all the things on it and it keeps them in one place while you do other things. No worries of them crawling into
dangerous areas. Even my 3 year old enjoys jumping in there and playing with all the “activities”. I saw that there is currently one up for swapping on the Tots site and you can get it for almost nothing. See it here. It’s a really great toy.

Diaper Bags - what to get??

I wasn’t going to write about diaper bags since it really is a personal preference what kind to buy. It is largely based on price, style, and usability for you. But, I decided to write about them anyway since my experience with diaper bags have garnered me 3 different bags, and I ended up only using 1. I think I’ll put the other 2 on the totswapshop.com site.

Skip Hop Diaper bag OK. Bag number 1 was the Skip Hop super trendy diaper bag that costs well over $50. This bag may look nice but it is flat shape and can’t open very wide. If you stuff too many things in there, it it becomes really hard to carry - like carrying a round ball on a strap. It fits nicely on the handlebars of a stroller but that’s about all it does. Not very roomy and comfy.

The Importance of Tables and Chairs

All kids should have their own table and chair set, since they will find so many things to do with them. My son will often eat, play, draw, and watch tv from his own set of mini-furniture, keeping the grown-up table neat, tidy, and most importantly, marker free. We purchased a KidKraft Star Table and Chair set, but as we’re finding out, it’s not exactly the best choice for us. Even though it looks nice as well as useful for holding excess stuff, the set has its downside. The trays tend to hit the kids on their knees when they sit down (not to mention that they end up in different corners of the house quite often), and then there’s no where for them to put their feet. You can turn the set length wise as demonstrated in the picture, but that’s not the way my son has preferred to sit. He’ll usually set the chairs the other way, for some reason and is pretty stubborn about it. Anyway, while I might not recommend this particular set, I will say that any table and chair set is better than none, so pick one up that fits your budget and style!

Reusable Swim Diapers

reusable swim diapersWe think this is a must - reusable swim diapers by Water Pals. I’ve brought so many disposable swim diapers and threw them away after every swim, which is 2-3 times a week. This relieves my environmental waste guilt. It can be worn alone or under swim suits, it’s washable, can contain the “mess”, and it’s SPF 45. Everyone should stock up on these.

Great Toddler Bed

We brought the Elizabeth Toddler Bed and it is perfect. It is stylish, semi-enclosed (like the crib), and close to the floor. Comes with 2 bed rails to avoid falling out but we’ve always just used one. My child absolutely loves it and had it since she was 18 months old and also had no problem transitioning to it. The best thing about it is that it can convert to a full size bed just by buying bed rails and it really looks nice! It is also not too pricey (around $200), definitely a great buy!

Support working families!

I came across this down-to-earth grass-roots organization (MomsRising.org) that supports all aspects of family life - especially improving working mothers/families rights. They are very active, very professional and well organized and they are making a big splash (Barack Obama mentioned them by name recently). Supporting their campaigns through online lobbying is very easy.  Check out the website at  http://www.momsrising.org/
